Chico, a former contestant on X Factor, has appeared before the court and entered a not guilty plea regarding drink driving charges.
At 54 years old, and known by his real name Yousseph Slimani, he participated in the television talent show in 2005 and subsequently achieved a number one hit with the song “It’s Chico Time.”
Mr. Slimani arrived at Willesden Magistrates’ Court wearing a distinctive cowboy hat and a fur coat. His defense team claimed that he had consumed cough syrup, which could affect breathalyzer results.
He has been granted bail and is scheduled to stand trial on April 9.
The singer is facing allegations of drink driving in Southgate, north London, occurring on December 13, during which he reportedly had a breath alcohol reading of 40 micrograms per 100 milliliters, as stated in court documents.
In England, the legal driving limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters.
Mr. Slimani was born in Bridgend and relocated to Morocco, the country of his father’s origin, as a child, where he helped care for goats on his grandparents’ farm.
He currently leads a guided meditation practice that incorporates “ancient sounds believed to be the source of the universe, designed to promote inner peace and tranquility,” as outlined on his website.
