A current officer with the Metropolitan Police has been taken into custody on suspicion of obstructing justice, linked to an allegation that surfaced during a BBC Panorama investigation.

The individual, a sergeant assigned to the Charing Cross police station, was detained in connection with an incident that occurred on Thursday, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

Following the arrest, the officer has been released on bail and has been suspended from their duties.

This arrest comes on the heels of a Panorama undercover investigation that exposed a group of Metropolitan Police officers at the central London station making calls for immigrants to be harmed, expressing delight in using excessive force, and displaying indifference towards claims of sexual assault.

The officer was apprehended by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards on Thursday evening, as stated by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine.

“We have made it abundantly clear that we will relentlessly address issues at Charing Cross and elsewhere throughout the Metropolitan Police,” Mr. Valentine stated.

He noted that “internal reporting mechanisms” were instrumental in bringing this “new issue” to light.

“We continue to encourage and support all officers and staff to report any allegations of criminal activity or misconduct so that we can respond promptly.”
