Bahamas Waste Ltd., the nation’s leading waste management company, is once again demonstrating its unwavering commitment to community development and local sports. This time, the company is supporting the revitalization of the Winton Rugby Club in New Providence, a key facility for rugby and other sports in The Bahamas.
The project, spearheaded by the Bahamas Rugby Football Union (BRFU), aims to restore the Winton Rugby Field to its former glory, creating a safe and welcoming environment for athletes, families and the broader community. As part of the refurbishment, Bahamas Waste has stepped in to assist with waste management during the demolition and cleanup phases. The company’s collection trucks and bins are playing a vital role in clearing away debris, paving the way for much-needed renovations.
Managing Director of Bahamas Waste Francisco de Cardenas, affectionately known as Franny, expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
“Sports have always been a passion of ours at Bahamas Waste. Rugby, in particular, is not only a great game but also an excellent way to foster discipline, teamwork and resilience in our youth. Supporting the Winton Rugby Club refurbishment is just another way for us to invest in the health and growth of our community,” said de Cardenas.
The Winton Rugby Club, home to rugby, flag football and youth soccer, sits on nine acres of land and has been a cornerstone of local sports for decades. However, the facility had fallen into disrepair, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when contact sports were put on hold. Now, with the help of Bahamas Waste and other community partners, the club is undergoing a significant transformation.
Treasurer of the BRFU and Buccaneers Rugby Club Secretary Viv Watts highlighted the importance of the refurbishment.
“Bahamas Waste has always been a fantastic supporter of Bahamas Rugby, and especially now, as we embark on this major project. Their contribution is invaluable in helping us create a safe, clean and functional space for athletes and the wider community,” said Watts.
The refurbishment project includes a comprehensive overhaul of the club’s facilities. Immediate goals include repairing the clubhouse roof, repainting masonry and improving the car park. The club also plans to introduce a new bar, an outdoor kitchen, and a dedicated club room for the Golden Oldies — a group that has been instrumental in supporting rugby in The Bahamas. Long-term plans include resurfacing the fields and enhancing drainage systems, ensuring that the Winton Rugby Field can accommodate a variety of sports and community activities.
“Sports teaches invaluable life skills and builds strong communities,” said de Cardenas. “At Bahamas Waste, we’re committed to fostering these opportunities, whether it’s through rugby, swimming, rowing or flag football. We believe that clean, well-maintained facilities play a crucial role in encouraging participation and pride in our local sports programs.”
In addition to their involvement in sports, Bahamas Waste has a long-standing tradition of community service, including providing year-round waste management services to underserved organizations like the All Saints Camp and the Bahamas National Trust. Their dedication to environmental and social responsibility is a cornerstone of their mission to create a cleaner, healthier tomorrow.
The restoration efforts at the rugby club are already underway, with the first phase of construction set to be completed shortly. The remaining renovations will follow over the next six months, with field resurfacing scheduled to begin in July. By 2027, the Winton Rugby Field is expected to realize its potential as a premier, multi-sport facility.
