Las Vegas – Authorities uncovered the bodies of a mother and her preteen daughter in a Rio Hotel & Casino room Sunday, determining the mother shot her child before taking her own life.[1][2]

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a welfare check call around 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Rio Hotel & Casino, located west of the Strip. Hotel security assisted after repeated knocks and calls yielded no response from the room. Officers entered and found the two victims deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.[3]

The incident occurred sometime Saturday night, police stated during a briefing. Lt. Robert Price described the discovery as tragic. Investigators quickly classified the case as a murder-suicide. No other individuals appeared involved.[4]

Victims Traveled from Utah for Cheer Event

The mother, identified as Tawnia McGeehan in her mid-30s, and her daughter Addi Smith, a preteen cheerleader, hailed from Utah. They stayed at the hotel for a local cheer competition organized by Utah Xtreme Cheer. The cheer group reported them missing Sunday morning after they failed to appear at the event.[3][4]
