Iran successfully launched three domestically developed observation satellites into orbit from Russia on Sunday, as reported by state television. This achievement represents a significant advancement for Tehran’s space program despite ongoing Western sanctions.
The Iranian government asserts that its aerospace endeavors are peaceful and adhere to UN Security Council regulations related to its nuclear activities.
According to Iranian television, “Three Iranian satellites—Zafar-2, Paya, and Kowsar 1.5—were lifted into space by a Soyuz rocket launched from Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome.”
These satellites are intended for “observation” purposes and were designed by private sector enterprises, as noted by the official IRNA news agency.
Among them, Paya stands out as Iran’s most sophisticated domestically manufactured imaging satellite, utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance image clarity, according to IRNA. The satellite is expected to focus on managing water resources, monitoring environmental changes, and mapping.
The choice of the Russian Soyuz launcher was due to its reputation as one of the most reliable options globally for deploying sensitive satellites, as reported by Fars news agency.
In the past two years, Iran has conducted 10 satellite launches, including one in July from the same launch facility in Russia.
