A court in Yekaterinburg has sentenced a former police officer to a four-year suspended prison term for admitting to selling confidential criminal reports to his journalist nephew, as reported by the court’s press service on Tuesday.
Andrei Karpov was detained in June on accusations of bribery and misuse of power. Investigators claimed that he provided his nephew, Denis Allayarov, editor of Ura.ru, with police briefings that included personal information and pre-trial details, in return for financial compensation.
Karpov accepted his guilt and opted for a special trial process, which allowed the matter to be settled without a comprehensive review of the evidence.
On Tuesday, the Verkh-Isetsky District Court declared him guilty and imposed a suspended sentence of four years, along with a probation period of four years.
Additionally, he has been prohibited from serving in law enforcement for three years, lost his rank of senior lieutenant, and has been instructed to repay 120,000 rubles ($1,500), which investigators stated he obtained unlawfully.
On Friday, Karpov testified against his nephew Allayarov in a separate bribery case that is still ongoing in the same court, although no trial date has been established yet.
Allayarov denies purchasing police documents, asserting that the money he transferred was solely intended to assist his grandmother with purchasing food and medicine.
