On Tuesday, state prosecutors classified GSC Game World, the Ukrainian studio known for the popular S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game series, as an “undesirable” organization due to its alleged financial support of the Ukrainian military.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia accused the senior leadership of the Kyiv-based studio of transferring approximately $17 million to a military aid fund for Ukraine in 2022, asserting that this funding was utilized for acquiring drones, vehicles, and other military necessities. They also alleged that the company contributed to framing Russia as an “aggressor state.”
In their statement, the office claimed that a game from GSC set to be released in 2024 promoted “Ukrainian narratives” and included “hostile Russophobic content.”
These allegations likely pertain to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the fourth installment of GSC’s acclaimed survival-shooter franchise that came out last November.
According to Russian law, anyone associated with or involved in an organization deemed “undesirable” could face a prison sentence of up to four years, while those in leadership positions might face up to six years.
Russia implemented the “undesirable organization” law in 2015 and has utilized it to suppress independent media, opposition movements, and foreign NGOs. Hundreds of entities, including The Moscow Times, have been added to this list.
