Snap Unveils Enhanced AR Spectacles for Developers
Snap Inc., the creator of Snapchat, has been diligently developing augmented reality (AR) glasses over recent months. This week, they introduced an updated version of their developer-only AR Spectacles, now featuring an array of intriguing new functionalities.
New Features for Immersive Development
With this update, developers are now able to create location-based experiences that facilitate interactive walking routes and provide navigational assistance. Furthermore, these glasses enable users to monitor fitness activities and engage in gaming experiences based on their movements.
Enhanced Interaction Capabilities
The latest iteration also introduces improved hand tracking abilities which enhance interaction with virtual objects and typing using the AR keyboard. Among other innovative additions are support for leaderboards and the capability to access Lenses directly from messaging platforms.
A Developer-Centric Device
Launched last September, Snap’s fifth-generation Spectacles serve primarily as a development tool rather than targeting general consumers. Interested developers face a commitment cost of $99 per month over a year-long period—totaling approximately $1,200—just for access to these devices.
Bulky Design Yet Standalone Functionality
Currently perceived as heavy and cumbersome, the Spectacles might be too pricey for mass-market release at this stage. Nonetheless, they operate independently and display features akin to those seen in Meta’s upcoming products. Powered by Snap OS alongside the Snap Spatial Engine technology, these spectacles can produce augmented reality visuals or Lenses that blend seamlessly with real-life environments.
A Decade in Development
The launch was touted by Snap as the culmination of ten years’ worth of research efforts into AR technology. The spectacles feature four cameras along with dual Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and compact micro-projectors capable of sustaining around forty-five minutes between charges.
The Competitive Landscape in AR Glasses
While Apple has also ventured into developing its own smart AR glasses—halting one project earlier this year—the company remains tight-lipped about future plans. It’s likely that brands such as Meta and Snap may gain first-mover advantage in bringing their hardware solutions to consumers ahead of Apple’s entry into this competitive space.
