Timeline:
At 4.58pm (March 5), police were called to the scene of the crash, involving two children and a black BMW i40, at Kendal Rugby Club on Shap Road.
The crash resulted in the death of a ten-year-old girl from Kendal. Specialist officers are continuing to support her family.
The second child, an eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal. She was taken to the hospital for treatment, but her injuries are not said to be ‘life-threatening’.
Police statement:
At this stage, police say ‘there is no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act’.
A 40-year-old man from Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said: “Investigative enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of this incident and to inform a future coronial process.
“A multi-agency response will continue today to support people affected by this incident.
“Anyone who directly witnessed the collision is asked to contact police by reporting online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it, quoting incident number 195 of 5 March,” they said.
Community reaction
A spokesperson from Kendal Rugby Club said: “We appreciate the concern in the local community and thank everyone for their kindness and patience during this incredibly difficult time.
“Out of respect for the families involved, we will not share further details.

“We continue to work the authorities involved as they conduct their investigation.”
The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, said he is ‘praying’ for the community.
“This is devastating, utterly heart-breaking news,” he said.
“I’m praying for the children and for their families and friends. Our community in Kendal is stunned and in mourning.”

Local rugby clubs, including Windermere, Cockermouth, and Keswick Rugby, have expressed their condolences and support for the affected families.
Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Jonathan Cornthwaite, said: “It’s hard to put into words our sense of shock at such a tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by this terrible event,” he said.
“Churches across Kendal are open today (Thursday) for anyone needing a moment of quiet reflection.”
