Of the six canines I’ve adopted through the years, three of them had dramatic “who is that dog in the mirror” incidents.
There was the time a clerk at an upscale Newbury Road retailer in Boston properly advised that my black Labrador, Solly, and I depart after he caught a glimpse of himself within the mirror and had a meltdown.
Then there was the time my yellow Lab, Daisy, horrified me when she glanced up at a mirror in an elevator ceiling and abruptly began barking, snarling, and growling. I believed one thing demon-like was crawling above us.
Talking of demons, the primary time my pup, Macy, seemed in a mirror, she made noises like she was possessed.
Why do some canines have such distinct reactions after they see their reflections? Do canines acknowledge themselves within the mirror? Do canines perceive mirrors? Determining the solutions to those questions has been a scorching subject for animal researchers.
