On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump advocated for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, cautioning that any violations would result in sanctions.
“Discussions with Russia and Ukraine are ongoing. The U.S. is urging for, ideally, a 30-day unconditional ceasefire,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform shortly after a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He further stated, “If the ceasefire isn’t adhered to, the U.S. and its allies will impose additional sanctions.”
Trump emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine would be responsible for “upholding the integrity of these direct negotiations,” suggesting that the ceasefire should establish a foundation for a “lasting peace.”
“This can all be achieved quite swiftly, and I am ready to assist at a moment’s notice if needed,” he remarked.
In February, Trump initiated discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to fulfill a campaign promise to end the conflict within 24 hours if re-elected. However, he has increasingly voiced frustration with both parties as hostilities continue.
Senior U.S. officials have indicated that Washington may reevaluate its mediating role if there isn’t progress soon.
Zelensky stated on social media Thursday that Ukraine is prepared to engage in talks “in any format,” but stressed that a comprehensive ceasefire must come first.
