The United States has presented a draft ceasefire plan for Ukraine to its European allies, which includes the possibility of sanctions relief for Russia, as reported by Bloomberg on Friday, citing unnamed European officials familiar with the situation.
This proposal was discussed during a meeting in Paris on Thursday attended by representatives from Britain, Germany, France, and Ukraine.
According to the U.S. State Department, the plan reflects Washington’s vision for a “sustainable and enduring peace” and was shared with all stakeholders following discussions between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Bloomberg reported that under the U.S. proposal, fighting would be halted along existing front lines, which would effectively allow Russia to retain control over occupied Ukrainian regions. Additionally, it would impede Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO in exchange for the lifting of certain sanctions.
The suggested framework does not represent a final resolution and would necessitate further negotiations with Ukraine, according to Bloomberg. Additional discussions are set to occur in London next week.
While the report did not detail which sanctions might be lifted, the Kremlin has indicated that sanctions relief is essential for mending relations with Washington. Russian officials have specifically called for the removal of restrictions related to aviation.
