On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Elon Musk, likening him to the renowned Soviet rocket engineer Sergei Korolev, who was a trailblazer in space exploration.
Putin’s remarks were made during a visit to Bauman Moscow State Technical University, a prominent institution focused on science and engineering, as relations between Russia and the U.S. became increasingly cooperative under President Donald Trump’s administration, of which Musk, the founder of SpaceX, is a significant contributor.
“There is an individual living in the United States, Musk, who is truly enthusiastic about Mars,” Putin stated to the students. “Such individuals are rare in our world; they are driven by a particular vision.”
He added, “While these concepts may seem far-fetched today, many of them often materialize over time, much like the visionary ideas that Korolev and our pioneers realized in their era.”
Korolev is celebrated as the architect of the Soviet Union’s space program, credited with creating the first satellite, Sputnik, and the spacecraft Vostok 1, which successfully launched Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, in 1961.
Musk, recognized as the wealthiest person globally and a major advisor to Trump, leads SpaceX, a U.S. aerospace manufacturer that conducts rocket launches for NASA and operates the Starlink satellite internet system.
