The sporting communities in Wicklow are reeling following the untimely passing of a ‘beloved teammate and friend,’ over the weekend.

Brendan Stone passed away on Friday. The 19-year-old is the younger brother of senior county footballer, Malachy Stone.

The young athlete was ‘part of the latest generation’ of his family wearing the blue and white of Barndarrig and was a member of the Wicklow U20 football team.

‘AN INFECTIOUS PASSION’

Barndarrig GAA led tributes following the devastating death of the young man who they said was a ‘beloved teammate and friend.’

‘Brendan was a cherished member of our club, a dedicated athlete, and an integral part of our community,’ the club said, ‘His talent, spirit, and kindness touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing them.

‘Brendan had an infectious passion for the sport and was known for his bravery, physicality and determination. Whether on or off the field, Brendan brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to us all.’

The club added that Brendan siblings all represented Barndarrig GAA and would have been proud to feature on the first ever Senior football championship side alongside his brother Malachy.

Barndarrig GAA concluded by extending their condolences to the Stone family.

‘PROFOUND SHOCK’

As well as GAA, Brendan passionate about rugby with Wicklow RFC confirming their teammates death ‘with profound shock and sadness.’

They said: ‘Brendan has played rugby in Wicklow RFC since he was six years of age and was a proud member of Wicklow’s first ever under 20s team.

‘Brendan was a brilliant young rugby player and a fearless competitor. He played the game of rugby with skill, balance, speed and ferocity but always with a smile on his face. He was a lovely, kind and friendly young man with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile.’;

In 2024, Brendan won the players player of the year award with his club saying it was an ‘indication of his popularity in the squad.’

DEATH NOTICE

Brendan is survived by his adoring parents Peter and Patsy and loving siblings Aoibhín, Malachy, Róisín, Moira, Fainche and Diarmuid.

His death notice reads: ‘It is with broken hearts the Stone family announce the tragic passing of their beautiful son and brother, Brendan, in his 19th year, on Friday 21st February 2025.’

Funeral arrangements for the young sportsman will be released ‘later.’
