BEAWIHARTA / REUTERS France highlighted the “deterioration of the state of health” of Serge Atlaoui, a Frenchman sentenced to death in Indonesia in 2007, to ask Jakarta for his “immediate return”, announced Wednesday 8 January the Indonesian Ministry of Legal Affairs and Human Rights. “Given the deterioration of the state of health of Serge Atlaoui, humanitarian consideration for his immediate return would be appreciated,” declared the number two of the French embassy in Indonesia, Laurent Legodec, quoted in a press release to the resulting from a meeting between representatives of the two countries. Paris officially requested the transfer of Mr. Atlaoui in a letter from the Minister of Justice dated December 19, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, the Indonesian Minister of Legal Affairs and Human Rights, told Agence France-Presse at the end of December. The French government “respects Indonesia’s sovereignty in the administration of justice and will adapt the sentence in accordance with French law,” Mr. Legodec said in the press release. Serge Atlaoui, now aged 61, was arrested in 2005 in a factory where drugs had been discovered, in the suburbs of Jakarta, with the authorities accusing him of being a “chemist”. The artisan welder who arrived from Metz, in the north-east of France, father of four children, has always denied being a drug trafficker, claiming that he had only installed industrial machines in what he believed to be an acrylic factory. Initially sentenced to life in prison, he saw the Supreme Court increase the sentence, condemning him to death on appeal.
