The upcoming event is complimentary and extends an invitation to individuals with disabilities, their supporters, caregivers, and families. According to Marshall, this initiative has been made possible through collaboration with several organizations including Sport Manawatū, CCS, Mash, the Horowhenua District Council, the Rapid Relief Team, Mana Whaikaha, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, Pasifika for Tomorrow, Sisterhood: Think Hauora and Uniting Communities as well as Horowhenua Sport and Recreation.
Marshall herself navigates life with autism and a mild intellectual disability alongside audio sensitivity challenges. She established Levin Disability as a community where people living with disabilities can come together regularly for activities and special events. “The inspiration behind starting this group stemmed from my own experiences with disabilities; I realized there was a significant need for spaces where we could connect.”
She expressed concern over the isolation many people face within their homes due to feeling out of place in social environments: “There aren’t many opportunities for us to venture out or participate in community activities because of the overwhelming sense that we don’t fit in.”
Her vision for Levin Disability revolves around fostering friendships among disabled individuals while cultivating confidence needed to engage with broader society. “This group is inclusive – everyone is welcome regardless of ability status. If you’re feeling isolated or disconnected from others, come join us! Together we can enhance understanding and promote acceptance.”
The initiatives hosted by their community have included enjoyable evenings such as pizza nights, movie screenings under starlit skies at local parks, along with game nights brimming with laughter.
In addition to her work at Levin Disability group meetings aimed at building camaraderie among participants she contributes actively as a member of the Access and Inclusion Committee under the Horowhenua District Council’s umbrella. The aim here is to foster accessibility improvements throughout the community. “Participating on this committee has significantly bolstered my self-esteem by allowing me to share my personal journey while honing valuable leadership skills,” she emphasizes.
Currently she is collaborating closely with council representatives on implementing sensory hours at both Levin Aquatic Centre—an initiative she hopes will also be adopted by Woolworths supermarket in town.
