Revolutionizing Oral Health Access for People with Disabilities in Kansas
Oral Health Kansas is excited to share that it has received the ARPA 9817 Project grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Division of Health Care Finance (KDHE-DHCF). This vital funding aims to enhance access to dental services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who utilize Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS). The initiative also focuses on mitigating obstacles that caregivers face while facilitating oral health care at home, fostering a community perspective that recognizes oral health as an integral aspect of overall well-being for all Kansans, regardless of age, background, or financial situation.
A Commitment to Inclusive Dental Care
Tanya Dorf Brunner, the executive director of Oral Health Kansas, expressed enthusiasm about this transformative opportunity: “We are thrilled to have received this substantial funding. It empowers us to collaborate with our partners in dismantling barriers and enhancing access to dental care for people with disabilities throughout the state.” She emphasized that this grant reflects their unwavering commitment to creating a truly inclusive oral health landscape where everyone receives dignified and compassionate care.
Collaborative Efforts
To realize the goals set forth by this grant, Oral Health Kansas will partner with numerous organizations including InterHab, Families Together Inc., the Self Advocate Coalition of Kansas, Community Care Network of Kansas, along with other key stakeholders. This collaboration will be crucial in implementing innovative strategies aimed at improving service delivery.
Key Initiatives Under the Grant Increasing Accessibility for Dental Providers
A comprehensive statewide marketing initiative accompanied by technical support will focus on encouraging dental practices to enroll as Medicaid providers. Educational programs such as Project ECHO aim to foster confidence among practitioners when serving individuals with disabilities.
Promoting MyDental Care Passport
Outreach efforts geared towards dental clinics and disability service providers will promote the MyDental Care Passport. This tool is designed to bolster communication between caregivers and dentists while improving coordination in patient care—a significant advancement toward more personalized treatment strategies.
Empowering Through Education
New digital resources including instructional videos centered on adaptive aids along with training via Project Accessible Oral Health are on deck. Additionally, expanding programs like “Feeling Good About Your Smile” aims at boosting knowledge related to oral health among both consumers and healthcare providers alike.
This grant represents not just additional funding but a continuation of years-long endeavors which include initiatives like the Dental Passport program and advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing Medicaid dental coverage. With these resources at hand, Oral Health Kansas and its associates can further eliminate barriers hindering individuals with disabilities from accessing crucial oral healthcare while simultaneously fortifying support frameworks for caregivers throughout their communities.
