Every year we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (from September 15th to October 15th), by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Spanish, Mexican, and Central and South American people who’ve immigrated to the US, bringing their rich culture with them. September 15th is significant because it’s the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Latin America is home to so many culinary treasures—and delicious gifts—we’ve been the recipients. The population of Latin America also comprises a variety of ancestries, ethnic groups and races, making the region one of the most diverse in the world. With over 20 countries or territories, the recipes vary significantly from one country to the next, but are always packed with amazing flavors.

What is Latin American Food?
Latin American food is creative, bold, made with love and yes, sometimes spicy. It draws influences from Native American, Spanish, Asian and even African cuisines. These cuisines widely use spices like allspice, cumin, achiote etc. The chili peppers vary from region to region, and you’d want to adjust the amounts based on your spice tolerance. These cuisines also use fresh herbs like cilantro, thyme and oregano. The main components of recipes include rice, bread, beans, meat and more. And while most Hispanic recipes use meat as an ingredient, they’re easily adaptable and can be made vegetarian by swapping meat for beans.
