Greece Leads EU In Asylum Applications Per Capita In October 2024

The European Union recorded 86,945 first-time asylum applications from non-EU citizens in October 2024, marking a 24% decrease compared to October 2023, which saw 114,890 applications.

In addition, 7,475 subsequent applications were submitted, reflecting an 11% increase from October 2023’s 6,725.

These figures were published today by Eurostat, offering a detailed look into asylum trends across the EU.

Syrians Remain the Largest Group of Asylum Seekers

Syrians continued to constitute the largest group of asylum seekers, with 15,815 first-time applicants in October 2024. They were followed by Venezuelans (7,305), Afghans (5,870), and Turks (4,640).

Germany, Spain, Italy, and France Host Most Applicants

Germany (20,565), Spain (15,780), Italy (13,715), and France (13,135) collectively accounted for 73% of all first-time asylum applicants in the EU during October.

On a per capita basis, Greece recorded the highest rate of first-time applicants at 79.4 per 100,000 people, followed by Cyprus with 51.3. This highlights Greece’s role as a major entry point for asylum seekers, reflecting the country’s geographic position and migration pressures.

asy2 Unaccompanied Minors: A Focus on Vulnerable Groups

A total of 3,295 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum across the EU in October 2024, primarily from Syria (1,095) and Afghanistan (450). Germany received the highest number of these applications (1,010), with Greece following closely (445), underscoring its role in supporting vulnerable migrants.

Greece’s Role in EU Migration

Greece continues to play a pivotal role in managing migration in the Mediterranean, with one of the highest per capita rates of asylum seekers in the EU. As the region faces ongoing challenges, Greece’s efforts to support vulnerable groups, including unaccompanied minors, remain critical.
