Rugby league could soon be played in Africa, with the likes of Kenya and South Africa alongside the United States reportedly bidding to host the 2030 World Cup.

That is according to Code Sports, who are reporting a total of five countries have put their hand up to host the next World Cup after Australia and PNG in 2026.

Alongside Kenya, South Africa and the US, New Zealand and once again PNG are the contenders to welcome rugby league nations to their shores in 2030.

International Rugby League powerbrokers are reportedly keen to grow the game internationally, however they have one caveat.

Following France’s decision to pull out of hosting duties for the World Cup initially scheduled in 2025, every big must have government support.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the thousands of volunteers worldwide that make the playing of rugby league possible globally,” international rugby league chairman Troy Grant said.

“The board are united and working well with amazing contributions from Peter V’landys on the back of the NRL’s brilliant Vegas initiative giving international rugby league the breath of fresh air it needed after it lost its way.

“There’s no more mickey mouse stuff occurring or ad hoc fixtures occurring.

“All aspects of the game are improving player welfare and professionalism from nations is giving clubs more confidence. Better communication and a clearer calendar has also helped.

“There’s always more to do and more to improve but it’s tracking nicely a far cry from five years ago when quite frankly three new independent directors walked into a tuck shop operation.”

France, Kenya, New Zealand and PNG are also the nations who have been shortlisted to host the 2028 women’s World Cup.

Elsewhere, the Kangaroos will tour England in 2025 with the Ashes tour taking place for the first time in 20 years, with the last taking place in 1994. Shortened tours took place in 2001 and 2003.

Meanwhile, Australia will then vacate their spot in the Pacific Championships, with New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga contesting the Cup competition.

Fiji, PNG and Cook Islands again make up the Bowl contenders, with Samoa having toured England in 2024.
