A man booted another man in the head after violence exploded on a Wirral rugby pitch. Stephen Childs, 55, kicked Stephen Connor as he laid unconscious on the ground after being “suplexed” by another man during a match.

The incident occurred during at Oldershaw Rugby Club in Wallasey on November 19 2023. Mr Connor was tackled from behind and thrown onto the ground, knocking him unconscious, as Childs ran onto the pitch and kicked him in the head.

Childs, of Grange Moor, Runcorn, pleaded guilty to common assault. He appeared at Wirral Magistrates Court today. Joe Bleasdale, defending, said Childs had acted in “excessive self defence of another”. He said: “The victim was attacking somebody else. Before Childs managed to get to him and kick him, he was suplexed from behind. What Childs did after, which was a single blow, did not cause any additional injury at all.

“He’s a man who does have a record, however he hasn’t been before the courts since 2012. He’s a man who has completely turned his life around thanks to his wife. They have a nine-year-old son together who has ADHD.” He added that Childs suffered from poor health, heart and lung disease.

Robert Earl, prosecuting, said: “The victim didn’t want to bring charges against the rugby player who suplexed him. He accepts that’s part of the game. But the victim was unconscious, lying on the ground, when the defendant ran up and kicked him in the head. There’s no talk of self defence there.

“The victim does talk about the fear he felt of being kicked in the head and the risk of being given a life-changing injury. It’s a cowardly attack. Kicking somebody in the head while they are unconscious is something which is reprehensible.” He added that Childs had five offences against other people on his record, including assault.

The magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report, and the case was sent to Liverpool Magistrates Court. Childs will appear for sentence on February 5.
