Eni Unveils Europe’s Most Advanced Supercomputer: HPC6
Transformative Capabilities of HPC6
The Italian oil giant Eni has successfully launched HPC6, touted as the most formidable supercomputer in Europe. This groundbreaking system is set to enhance various critical areas, including geological studies for CO2 storage accuracy, advancements in battery efficiency, and streamlining biofuel supply chains.
Remarkable Computational Power
Engineered for high-performance tasks, the HPC6 boasts an astonishing computing capability of 606 PFlop/s—equivalent to over 600 quadrillion computations each second. With this launch, Eni proudly reports that it ranks fifth in the prestigious TOP500 list of supercomputers released on November 18, 2024. According to Eni’s statement: “This accomplishment positions HPC6 as Europe’s leading supercomputer and marks it as a pioneering industrial-use computational system worldwide; it is also the lone representative outside the United States within the top five globally.”
Pivotal Role in Decarbonization Efforts
The introduction of this innovation signifies a crucial advancement within Eni’s strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
Diverse Applications Enhancing Operational Efficiency
The implementation of high-performance computing at Eni supports varied applications such as refining industrial operations, enhancing geological analysis related to CO2 sequestration processes, innovating battery technologies for better performance, advancing biofuel logistics efficiency, creating new materials, and simulating plasma dynamics relevant to magnetic confinement fusion.
Leadership Insights on Technological Advancements
Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni remarked: “Technological progress empowers us to harness energy more efficiently while minimizing emissions and fostering innovative energy solutions.” He further emphasized that “the integration of supercomputing into our enterprise framework has turned it into an essential catalyst for reaching Net Zero targets while generating substantial value.”
A Leap Forward in Performance Metrics
The newly launched HPC6 exhibits a dramatic increase from its predecessors—HPC4 and HPC5—which operated at only 70 PFlop/s. This next-level machine harmoniously blends CPU and GPU architectures with over 3400 compute nodes combined with nearly 14,000 GPUs which significantly amplifies both performance metrics and energy conservation capabilities. It utilizes HPE’s advanced Cray EX4000 alongside Cray ClusterStor E1000 systems.
Sustainable Infrastructure Implementation
This cutting-edge technology is housed within a designated area inside Eni’s Green Data Centre located in Ferrera Erbognone near Milan. The new liquid cooling mechanisms integrated into this setup are optimized specifically to enhance energy efficiency by effectively managing heat production from this state-of-the-art machinery.
