Gabriela Dabrowski: Championing Resilience Through Breast Cancer
Gabriela Dabrowski, a celebrated figure in the world of tennis and three-time Grand Slam doubles champion, has opened up about her courageous journey battling breast cancer during the 2024 tennis season. The Olympics mixed doubles medalist and WTA Tour Finals women’s doubles titleholder shared her experience on Instagram, reflecting on the emotional challenges she faced following her diagnosis: “It’s perplexing how something so minuscule can create such profound issues.”
In spring 2023, at age 32, Dabrowski discovered a lump in her left breast. Initially reassured by a medical professional that there was no cause for concern, she found herself revisiting this issue months later. By the spring of 2024, under guidance from a WTA doctor, a mammogram followed by biopsy revealed an unsettling confirmation of breast cancer. Despite facing two surgeries and necessary recovery treatments, she remained dedicated to her sport and strategically postponed further treatment to compete in prestigious events like Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Her impressive run continued as she partnered with Erin Routliffe to reach the women’s doubles final at Wimbledon. Although they were defeated by Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, Dabrowski triumphed again at the Olympics by claiming a mixed doubles bronze medal alongside Canadian teammate Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Concluding an extraordinary season atop women’s tennis rankings, Dubrowski secured victory alongside Routliffe at the WTA Tour Finals held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia—grabbing over £800,000 collectively as their prize money. During this major event,
she made a poignant statement by tossing pink tennis balls into the audience—symbolic gestures aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer—despite keeping details about her condition private until after.
“Through this journey,” she expressed regarding her decision to disclose her diagnosis publicly,
“I have come to understand my place within something greater than myself.” Currently navigating treatment side effects more competently than before,
Dabrowski acknowledges that not everyone is fortunate enough to share their story openly.
As of now ranked No. 3 globally in doubles competition,
Dabrowski earned recognition as Canada’s first woman Grand Slam titleholder after seizing victory at the French Open mixed doubles alongside Rohan Bopanna in 2017.
She later celebrated another Grand Slam win during the Australian Open mixed category with Mate Pavic
and captured yet another title with Routliffe during their standout performance at the U.S. Open in 2023.
Her career statistics reveal an impressive total of
17 doubles titles amassed throughout these years.
This ordeal instilled profound insights into how Dabrowski approaches both life and sport:
“If you’ve noticed me genuinely smiling more frequently on-court lately,
it’s because I am truly happier,” she remarked thoughtfully.
While positive thinking has been part of her personal development via therapy over several years,
her cancer diagnosis spurred deeper transformation.
“When faced with potential loss threatening my lifelong aspirations,” she reflected poignantly “only then did I start appreciating everything around me — loving family members,
dedicated friends,
incredible coaches standing beside me,”
an unwavering team supporting each other amid adversity —
“and access to expert healthcare while being lucky enough to derive my livelihood from playing.”
