Cape Town is gearing up for an action-packed weekend of rugby, music, and festivities as the HSBC SVNS rugby tournament returns to the city, Cape {town} Etc reports.
While the excitement promises to be palpable both on and off the field, Cape Town residents and commuters are being warned about significant road closures in and around the Green Point Precinct, potentially impacting traffic flow.
The two-day event will see DHL Stadium transformed into a buzzing festival ground, not only for rugby but also for live music performances, including headliners Tyler ICU and Kamo Mphela. A highlight of this year’s festival is a world record attempt for the largest Amapiano dance-off, which promises to add even more energy to an already vibrant event.
But as spectators flock to the event, they’ll need to plan ahead for the road closures that will affect the area. Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, urged residents and visitors to plan their travel routes carefully:
‘Cape Town once again sets the stage for excitement on and off the field. It’s going to be a fun-filled weekend of rugby, dancing, and music, and I am looking forward to a spectacular show. I encourage ticket holders to plan their days and routes to the stadium. Residents and commuters who usually make use of roads in the area are also advised to take note of closures. It’s one of our premier events, and we want to make sure everyone enjoys it to the fullest,’ said Smith.
Road closures and traffic restrictions
With thousands expected to attend, several major roads around Green Point will be closed or restricted during the event. The closures, in effect from 06:00 to 22:30 on both Saturday and Sunday, include:
Fritz Sonnenberg Road: Full closure both directions
Stephan Way: Full closure both directions between Fritz Sonnenberg Road and Hamilton’s Rugby Club.
Vlei Road: Full closure both directions between Helen Suzman Boulevard and Fritz Sonnenberg Road.
Fort Wynyard Street: Total closure from Portswood Road to Granger Bay Boulevard.
Granger Bay Boulevard: Full closure both directions between Helen Suzman Boulevard and Beach Road.
The closures are expected to cause traffic congestion, and Smith recommends that residents and visitors use alternative routes where possible.
MyCiTi shuttle service and parking
To ease the burden on local roads, fans are encouraged to make use of the free MyCiTi shuttle service, available to ticket holders. The shuttle buses will depart from key points including the Civic Centre, Thibault Square, and the CTICC on both days of the event. More details on the shuttle schedule can be found on the MyCiTi website.
For those planning to drive, parking will be available at the Civic Centre, CTICC, and on-street locations. The City of Cape Town will also open 475 parking bays at the Civic Centre, available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 07:30. These parking areas can be accessed via Hertzog Boulevard and Civic Road.
A festival for all
The HSBC SVNS rugby tournament has become a cornerstone of Cape Town’s summer event calendar, combining the thrill of rugby with live music, dancing, and entertainment. Fans attending this weekend’s event will be treated to an impressive lineup, including music from DJ Ready D, Roger Goode, Neon Dreams, and Gremlin, in addition to the rugby action.
Rugby fans can also look forward to thrilling matches, with the Blitzboks set to play their first game against Ireland at 11:44 on Saturday, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Argentina at 18:41 to close out the day.
For those eager to join in the action or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere, tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Fans are also urged to take note of the road closures to avoid delays and make the most of their time at the festival.
Smith concluded: ‘This event is about creating an unforgettable experience for everyone, and with careful planning, we can ensure that both the rugby and the celebrations go smoothly for all attendees.’
