It felt like everyone I knew – and their mother – took a trip to Puerto Rico this year. Perhaps it was the endless sunshine (over 300 days of it annually) or the unmatched ease for U.S. travelers: direct flights, no currency exchange, no scrambling for the right adaptor, and the bonus of widely spoken English. With more than 300 miles of stunning coastline and a vacation-perfect climate, Puerto Rico is often called America’s Costa del Sol. Factor in 120 weekly flights from 20 airlines into San Juan, and it’s no wonder this island paradise is buzzing year-round!

Puerto Rico, the third largest Caribbean Island after Cuba and Jamaica, usually attracts around five million visitors annually with nearly half arriving between December and April. In 2023, that number soared to over 6.1 million passengers arriving at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), an impressive 18.6 percent increase from the previous year, signaling the island’s ever-growing appeal. Tourism revenue also hit a record-breaking $9.8 billion, reflecting a 13 percent rise year-over-year, cementing Puerto Rico’s status as a must-visit destination.

But is it safe for LGBTQ+ travelers? Absolutely.

A U.S. territory since 1898, Puerto Rico is a captivating fusion of rich culture, vibrant history, and stunning natural beauty. Home to around 3.2 million people, with San Juan, its lively capital, home to approximately 340,000 residents, the island effortlessly blends the charm of the Caribbean with the ease of American conveniences. Despite its predominantly Catholic roots, Puerto Rico is remarkably LGBTQ+-welcoming, offering a progressive atmosphere that fosters inclusivity. The island’s LGBTQ+ rights, including same-sex marriage and strong legal protections, make it a safe and inviting destination for queer travelers.

During my first visit earlier this summer, I was immediately captivated by Puerto Rico’s undeniable charm and magnetic allure – qualities that keep visitors returning to its shores time and time again. From the spirited community to the warm hospitality, it’s easy to see why this island is cherished by so many.

For the past five summers, The Sheraton has hosted Viva La Rooftop H2oh! Edition, Puerto Rico’s hottest pool party of the season. This annual event closes out Pride Month on the island, making a splash for a great cause. The lounge-inspired pool party, the highlight of my trip, supports the True Self Foundation – a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the well-being and social mobility of the local LGBTQ+ communities. This vibrant event is a lively celebration of culture, community, and entertainment. This past summer, the event featured a lively Drag Brunch hosted by Latoya Fruitpunch, live DJ sets, and a spectacular fashion show with stunning designs from House of La’boyx, Rinaldi Droz, and Alma Brava. Guests enjoyed cocktail-style food and beverages while cooling off in the infinity pool and taking in breathtaking views of the San Juan Bay. With ticket sale proceeds benefiting the True Self Foundation, Viva La Rooftop H2oh! Edition is not only a highlight of the summer for queer locals and visitors alike but also a meaningful way to support diversity and inclusion.

While Viva La Rooftop is an annual summer event, the hotel recently announced plans to host quarterly Pride-themed brunches.

Same-sex relationships have been legal in Puerto Rico since 2002

The first thing that pops into my head when planning a trip to a Caribbean island is, “Is it safe?” Or, more specifically, “Will I get murdered for being gay? (Looking at you, Jamaica!)

Puerto Rico has made significant strides in LGBTQ+ rights over the years, fostering a more inclusive and welcoming environment. Since 2003, same-sex relationships have been legal, reflecting a commitment to equality and acceptance. The landmark decision to permit same-sex marriage and adoptions further solidified Puerto Rico’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights, allowing couples to celebrate their love and build families without legal barriers.

Additionally, U.S. federal hate crime laws apply in Puerto Rico, offering legal protection against discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity. These advancements contribute to Puerto Rico’s reputation as a progressive destination, attracting LGBTQ+ travelers from around the world to experience its vibrant culture and welcoming spirit.
