The City of St. Augustine will celebrate America’s Recycle Day — with the rest of America — on Friday, Nov. 15.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. city residents can shred up to five boxes of documents per household, recycle electronic devices and dispose of used cooking oils.

E-waste can be dropped off at the Solid Waste Facility located at 601 Riberia St. and cooking oil should be dispersed at the Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 501 Riberia St.

Recyclable e-waste (electronic devices) includes laptops; complete PC towers; hard drives; memory chips; CD drives; power supplies; phone chargers; cellphones; house, tool and car batteries; iPads and Tablets; digital cameras; stereos; scanners; printers; copiers; power chords; and Christmas lights.

Televisions, hazardous waste, including paint and pesticides, used tires and motor oil will not be accepted.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, recycling paper, bottles and magazines saves energy.

“The materials that you recycle are used to create the products you buy,” they noted on their website. “This means less virgin material needs to be mined or harvested, processed, manufactured, and transported – all of which consumes energy.”

The DEP listed the benefits of recycling as:

Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.

Conserving natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.

Increasing economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials.

Preventing pollution by reducing the need to mine raw materials.

Saving energy.

Supporting American manufacturing and conserves valuable resources.

Creating new jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States.
