ALCESTER RFC 2nds recorded a gutsy comeback 30-25 win against visitors Camp Hill 3rds at Kings Coughton, having trailed 20-5 at one stage in the first half.
The home side, with a core of former Colts players who have moved up to senior rugby in the last two seasons, conceded experience and bulk to their opponents, but despite that being a factor in the first half, they eventually ground down Camp Hill. Their additional fitness and team spirit eventually won the day, in an entertaining game.
Camp Hill took an early lead and then added two more quickfire scores midway through the first half.
The resilient home side came close to scoring in the corner, only for a foot to stray in touch, but Toby Birks, capped a fine all-round performance with a try. Freddie White converted to leave the score at 7-15.
The visitors hit back, using their bigger, more experienced pack to catch and drive over from a short-range lineout and came close to adding a fifth but on the stroke of half-time James Walker raced in for Alcester’s second try, which Charlie Rose only narrowly failed to convert from an awkward angle.
Alcester only trailed 20-12 at the break but had the slope in their favour in the second half.
Prop Will Mitchell was held up over try line, before the visitors were reduced to 14 players when they received a yellow card for persistent infringements.
Alcester capitalised when Dylan Robson, enjoying an impressive first start in an unfamiliar position of scrum half, picked up and dived over to bring Alcester within three points.
Alcester’s young side went in front for the first time in the game when Joey Wheeler sped away to score under the posts. Debutant James Widdop converted the score, before increasing Alcester’s lead to 27-20 with a long-range drop goal.
After restoring their full 15, Camp Hill received another yellow card for a high tackle and from the resulting penalty Widdop added another three points.
The visitors kept pressing and on the final whistle they scored their fifth try with the conversion attempt bouncing off the crossbar to leave the final score at 30-25 to Alcester.
Among the many standout performances for Alcester, skipper Luke Spencer nominated flanker Pav Sembakuttige as man of the match.
Next up for the 2nds is Bromsgrove Veterans tomorrow (Saturday).
The 1st XV are at home to Old Leamingtonians. Both matches kick off at 2.15pm.
