Romania is participating at American Film Market 2024 with 16 companies exhibiting under Creative Romanian Film Makers brand.
The origins of Romanian film can be traced back to more than a century ago, when the filmmaking technology (starting with that of the Lumiere brothers) had reached Romania soon after its invention. Nevertheless, the Romanian art film debuted at the beginning of the second decode of the 20th century.
For a long time, financial and political circumstances mode film production hard especially between 1911 and 1948, but that did not hinder artists such as Aristide Demetriade and Grigore Brezeanu from showcasing their talent through their work “The Independence of Romania” in the early 1910s. Nor did it stop Jean Georgescu from rendering the famous cinematic version of I.L. Caragiale’s play, “A Stormy Night”, in the early 1940s. The political situation in the country after the late 1940s impelled the art of film to escape into fantasy or resume to subtle attacks on the regime, either approach becoming remarkable through vision.
After the 1989 revolution, there seems to be a distinctive surge towards a new wove of Romanian cinematography, where socio-political themes alternate with art and commercial film (be it Western European or American in style). In these past years Romanian film and actors alongside directors and producers seem to better understand the public’s needs and expectations and thus they have started to deliver internationally successful productions such as Cristian Mungiu’s “Four months, three weeks and two days, Adrian Sitoru’s “Illegitimate”, Radu Jude’s “Aferim”, or Adina Pintilie’s “Touch Me Not”, all of them being highly praised at Cannes Film Festival or the Berlinale.
