This week, the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) released an update on the current state of the potato market in Ireland, noting that retail sales have stabilized. The upcoming school mid-term break is anticipated to increase demand from the food service sector, offering a potential boost for the market.
According to the IFA, good progress has been made in lifting crops across the country, thanks to favorable weather conditions. However, correcting dry matter in late-planted crops remains a challenge, as does achieving proper skin set. Donegal, in particular, has seen slower progress compared to other regions. Additionally, yields for later-planted crops continue to lag behind last year’s levels in many areas.
Slow Harvest in Belgium and Normandy, U.K. Clearance Improving
Beyond Ireland, the IFA reports that lifting operations in Normandy and Belgium have been hampered by recent heavy rainfall, significantly slowing progress. In Belgium, clearance is currently only around 50%, with some growers who rely on contractors yet to begin their harvest.
Meanwhile, in the U.K., good clearance has been reported across most regions. For crisping varieties, clearance is estimated at 70 to 75%. However, lifting is severely delayed in South Shropshire and Herefordshire. Concerns over quality have led to the unloading of “two or three” stores due to fears regarding the keeping quality of the crop.
