(Peru) — Former Plattsmouth standout and Peru State senior Kennedy Miller recently received a weekly honor from the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
“Things are going really well,” Miller told KMA Sports. “This season, we had a bunch of new freshmen come in, and they have been working really hard. I knew from the start of the season that this is going to be a really competitive year.”
Miller was named the Heart Defender of the Week last Monday, following a week that saw her total 18 blocks and average 1.29 swats per set.
“I’ve really been working on my eye work this season,” Miller told KMA Sports. “Every day, I’m coming into practice and really trying (to be in the right position). I just feel like I was in the right position, and I just knew some of them were going to be stuff blocks.”
Miller had her best performance against Baker, totaling six solo blocks and 11 total. She also added 12 kills during the course of the week, as the Bobcats beat both MidAmerica Nazarene and Baker.
“It was really awesome for our team,” Miller said. “We had the momentum, and we had the drive. I just knew we were going to have a good game.”
For the season, Miller has played in 26 matches and is averaging 1.09 kills and has 96 total blocks. Along with her standout play on the court, she has a vital role off of it.
“I am a captain this year,” she said. “I really try to be there for my team, and we do team bonding once a week. That has really been helping just communication throughout the whole season. We talk every day as a team, we discuss differences in our life and our communication off the court (has been good). That’s where you grow as a team, and that’s the one thing that has really been helping us be successful this year.”
Following a split weekend with a loss to Mount Mercy and a win over Clarke, the Bobcats are 11-16 overall and 6-8 in the Heart. That’s already an improvement from last year’s nine total wins and four in the league.
“Our practices are so competitive,” Miller said. “We want to get each other better. The starting lineup has been different throughout the season, and when a girl needs to step in they step in.”
