The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC 1124) recently completed a 46-day patrol in Oceania and returned to Honolulu. Departing from Coast Guard Base Honolulu in August, the crew traveled over 7,600 nautical miles to reach the west coast of Fiji. This patrol was conducted as part of Operation Blue Pacific, a multi-mission effort by Coast Guard District 14 to promote security, safety, sovereignty, and economic prosperity in Oceania.
During their deployment, the Oliver Berry crew engaged in various activities aimed at enhancing maritime domain awareness and combating illegal fishing across Oceania. They also focused on strengthening relationships with regional partners. In particular, they enacted two bilateral maritime law enforcement agreements with Fiji and Samoa.
In Fiji, local law enforcement officers from different agencies were hosted on board the cutter under the shiprider provision of the bilateral maritime law enforcement agreement. This resulted in conducting several boardings on recreational vessels, sailing vessels, and commercial fishing vessels within Fiji’s archipelagic waters.
Upon moving to Samoa’s vicinity during their patrol, an enhanced bilateral maritime law enforcement agreement was exercised for detecting and monitoring active fishing vessels within Samoa’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
