Sonam Wangchuk’s Campaign for Environmental Protection in Ladakh
Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known climate activist, was recently detained at Delhi’s Singhu border along with over 100 supporters while en route to Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi. This incident occurred during his campaign to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect the ecology of Ladakh.
Mr. Wangchuk and his volunteers were on their way to the national capital to advocate for granting sixth schedule status for Ladakh as a union territory. However, they were detained by the Delhi Police for violating prohibitory orders.
The key objective of their movement is to have Ladakh included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This would give the local population law-making powers and autonomy, enabling them to preserve their land and cultural identity.
The 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution provides special protections and autonomy for tribal areas, which helps in preserving their culture and managing resources effectively. After J&K was bifurcated following Article 370’s abrogation, Ladakh was granted separate UT status.
Take Action: Commit to making environmentally conscious choices in your daily life, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting eco-friendly businesses. Small changes can have a big impact when adopted collectively.
