KLM has confirmed that they are considering an adjustment to the food offered in Economy Class on European flights. The Dutch airline could stop serving free sandwiches from 2025.
Free sandwiches on KLM flights to come to an end
A KLM spokesperson told Luchtvaartniews that the company has noticed that the vegetarian cheese sandwich offered on short-haul routes doesn’t always meet the needs of passengers. The airline is now looking into “various concepts that make a wider range possible, for a fee.”
Because the Dutch airline is still in the process of researching other options, it’s not yet known exactly what the sandwich will be replaced by. One of the possibilities mentioned is that travellers may still get a free coffee, tea or water, and possibly a free snack. Any additional meals and drinks would then require extra payment.
KLM catering change still in research phase
The spokesperson from KLM has emphasised that the sandwich will still be around for the time being. “We are currently still in the research phase, the service will be introduced at the end of 2025 at the earliest,” stated the spokesperson to Luchtvaartnieuws.
KLM, along with sister company Air France, are some of the only remaining airlines that still provide a free meal on flights in western Europe. If changes like those suggested do come about, the catering on KLM flights will be similar to that of competitor airlines such as Lufthansa and British Airways.
