Every ⁢year, nearly 38 million pounds of waste are dumped on Washington state’s highways, roads, and public spaces, equating to approximately five pounds of trash per person. Litter doesn’t just mar the landscape, it also poses dangers to water quality and travelers. To combat this issue, the Washington State Department of Ecology has joined forces with the Department of Transportation, State Patrol, and other agencies to introduce the “Simple As That” campaign.

The state invests over $12 million annually‍ in cleaning up litter, and in 2023, paid crews and ‍volunteers collected a remarkable 11.2 million pounds of litter. However, this still only addresses a fraction of the problem. A 2022 statewide litter ‍study revealed that common littered items include cigarette butts, food ⁤wrappers, glass bottles, and construction debris.

Governor Jay Inslee emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in preventing littering, stating,⁤ “We spend millions each year to clean our roads – but it costs nothing for each of us to‌ do the‍ right thing and pick up after ourselves.” To support a litter-free Washington, the “Simple As That” campaign and its partners are urging people to take the following steps:

• Keep a litter bag in your car: Use a litter bag while traveling to maintain ⁣a tidy vehicle and minimize the chances of accidental ⁣littering.‍ When visiting parks or recreation areas, carry‌ a bag to easily pack out what you brought in.
• Hold on to trash while traveling: Refrain from tossing trash until reaching your destination or finding a waste bin at a stop along the way.
• Live litter-free and help others do the same: ‌Educate your friends and family on living litter-free and assist them in making responsible choices.

In an effort to introduce the campaign to new audiences, the Department of Ecology has teamed up with community-based organizations to distribute “We Keep ⁤WA Litter Free” bags to individuals and families who are new to‌ the United States. “We ‌believe that everyone can do their part to keep our neighborhoods healthy,” stated Dr. Ileana Ponce-Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Community ‌Health Workers Coalition for Migrants ‍and Refugees.
