It was a strange summer at Newcastle United. Not just because of the lack of incomings, but the limited number of outgoings, where we also saw a few youngsters fail to land loan moves.

One player falling into this category is Garang Kuol; the Aussie talent in need of careful management after previous spells at Hearts and Volendam didn’t quite go to plan over the past season and a half.

Many were expecting to see him secure a third temporary switch, with pressure on loan boss Shola Ameobi to get it right this time. However, almost a week on from last Friday’s deadline, he’s yet to find a move.

Newcastle may have decided to keep him on Tyneside, although it could be that an injury has scuppered his hopes after Eddie Howe hinted at a knee problem at the end of July:

“We’re waiting to see what happened with him,” Howe said during our tour of Japan on July 31st. “He’s got a little bit of swelling in his knee so we’re not sure if he’ll be okay.”

Since then, we’ve not seen him feature in any pre-season friendlies or even for our U21 side, who are three games into the Premier League 2 season.

Certain windows are still open – we saw Serbian talent Miodrag Pivas complete a loan move to Willem II earlier this week – but it’s not yet clear if Kuol is being kept on Tyneside for the sake of his development or held back due to a knee injury which appeared to flare up at the end of July.

Either way, we’re hoping the 19-year-old can have a better season for the sake of his development after a tough 18 months since he first arrived on Tyneside.
