MILWAUKEE — A senior official from the Trump campaign emphasized that the 2024 presidential race will not conclude until Inauguration Day, rather than after Election Day on Nov. 5 when voters traditionally cast their ballots and a winner is usually projected.
Chris LaCivita, speaking at a Politico event, made this statement, which holds significance given former President Donald Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. The aftermath of the election saw a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021.
The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that post-Election Day in 2020, Trump collaborated with lawyers and election officials in seven states to create false elector slates. These slates were allegedly intended to be presented to Vice President Mike Pence during the certification in Congress following the presidential elections in early January.
LaCivita, serving as Trump’s co-campaign manager, remarked, “It’s not over until he puts his hand on the Bible and takes the oath. It’s not over until then. It’s not over on Election Day, it’s over on Inauguration Day, cause I wouldn’t put anything past anybody.”
Despite Trump’s absence at Biden’s inauguration, he and several Republican lawmakers persist in spreading baseless claims of victory.
LaCivita interjected during a discussion on the prospects for Democrats on Election Day, redirecting the focus back to campaign issues such as Social Security, Medicare, and border security.
In a response to questions about Trump potentially campaigning on pardoning Jan. 6 rioters, LaCivita emphasized the campaign’s commitment to discussing crucial issues rather than irrelevant matters.
Trump’s repeated false claims of election fraud post-2020 election resulted in legal battles that culminated in the violent events of Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol. An indictment was issued against Trump in 2023, accusing him of conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of official proceedings.
